Launched in 2006, Shopify has solidified its mark as one of the leading commerce platforms for online stores and retail point-of-sale (POS) systems and is one of the largest corporations based in Canada. Shopify makes it easy for merchants of all sizes to sell their products online, providing them not just with an online storefront but payments, fulfillment, and customer engagement tools as well. With a dynamic portfolio of a million businesses looking to expand their sales, Shopify was a perfect choice to become Walmart’s commerce platform partner.

One of the first businesses that benefitted from this new partnership is specialized outerwear company Shelta, a Shopify merchant who previously thought it wasn’t quite the right time to join Walmart Marketplace. However, the Shopify integration changed all that. “Times are changing and having a new audience with minimal work was enticing,” said Shelta co-founder Tom Schulz. “I’m glad I did it.”

What’s the advantage of using Shopify and integrating with Walmart Marketplace? In this Sell Better Blog we’ll detail the benefits of the partnership with Shopify, how sellers can easily integrate their assortment into the Marketplace, and Shelta’s experience in integrating into Walmart in just a couple of easy steps.

Take advantage of Walmart’s partnership with Shopify to strengthen your business

Shopify has had tremendous success attracting small businesses to its all-in-one commerce platform already, and with the negative impact of COVID-19 on many retail outlets, suddenly many more companies were looking to sell their goods online with no access to a brick-and-mortar presence. With access to Walmart Marketplace, you’ll have the ability to grow your business on one of the largest omnichannel retail channels in the world.

The process to start selling on Walmart Marketplace is very straightforward. Once you pass the approvals process, Shopify sellers can connect their store to their new Walmart Seller Account. From there you can connect their entire product catalog to Walmart Marketplace quickly and easily, all within the Shopify console. Your experience with all aspects of your operations with Walmart Marketplace is meant to be as seamless as possible. You can conduct everything you need to do in Shopify, like inventory and order management, and Shopify communicates all of these changes to Walmart in the background. You’ll be free to concentrate your time and energy on running your business.

“I just added the Walmart store in Shopify,” Tom commented. “I set up an account with Walmart and after one day the products populated and we were off. The overall experience was great.”

Finally, you won’t have to pay any additional fees to sell on Walmart Marketplace from Shopify. There are no monthly fees or other forms of upkeep costs; you’ll only have to pay a referral fee based on the category of each item you sell.

How Shelta expanded its catalog to Walmart.com in just one day

Shelta was founded in 2015 by sports industry veterans Jurgen and Tom Schulz. Headquartered in Carlsbad, California, their high-performance outerwear brand offers a variety gear with sun protection in mind, like neck shields, gloves, face gaitors and more. They started, however, with hats.

“We were born from necessity,” said Tom. “As an avid stand up paddler who is on the water daily, constant exposure to harmful UV rays is a critical concern. Not being able to find a hat that provides adequate UV protection, but doesn’t get in the way while paddling inspired me to design one of my own. The hat has been so well received that every fisherman, boat owner, jet ski owner and any person on the water have embraced it as their favorite sun hat.”

Previously Shelta had thought that their type of product wouldn’t be good for Walmart Marketplace at the moment, but the integration with Shopify changed a lot of things. “You can have the best website in the world,” Tom said. “However, getting customers to shop there is costly. You need to get your products in front of customers using as many sales channels as you can. Customers tend to stick within one platform. So, you need to get on as many platforms as possible, and we want Walmart customers looking at our product.” With Walmart Marketplace’s partnership with Shopify, this became a reality.

“My experience so far has been great,” Tom said about integrating with Walmart. “We didn’t really need much help. I did not have to do any special mapping to get my products to integrate with Shipstation or QuickBooks Online. We’re very happy.”

What’s Tom’s recommendation to other sellers about selling on Walmart? “They made it easy to make our products available. Why not do it?”
