Product Limitations for Marketplace Sellers

Prohibited Products Policy

Prohibited products cannot be listed or sold on Walmart's Marketplace. As a Marketplace Seller, it is your obligation to understand and comply with all of the legal requirements and Walmart Marketplace policies governing the sale of your products. Please consult with your legal counsel if you have questions about the laws and regulations concerning your products. Products that are not included in this policy must still comply with all applicable laws. This Prohibited Products Policy is subject to change.

Additional Product Restrictions


Brand Restrictions 

Walmart Marketplace partners with select sellers for sales of specific brands. All other offers of items for these brands will be unpublished. 
Unpublish message

“You can’t sell this brand on Walmart has partnered with select Sellers to sell this brand. For more info, create a case for Partner Support and include the code BIZ.”

Regulations on Plastics Sold in California

Plastic products, including a product’s plastic package or packaging component, that are labeled or marketed as "biodegradable," "degradable," "compostable," "decomposable," or any form of these terms, may not be sold in or into California. Pre-Approval Restrictions

As of September 1, 2017, items in the following categories require pre-approval from Walmart before Sellers may offer them on Walmart Marketplace. New brands or categories may be added at a future date.

  • Halloween and select seasonal products
  • Sellers may apply for approval to offer these categories and brands by contacting Partner Support.
  • Approvals will be granted for specific brands within these categories.
  • Approval could be retracted if there is a legal claim related to these categories, and other policy violations in general could influence approval decision.

Unpublish message: If your items are unpublished for this reason, you will see the message "Your item is violating the rules and regulations of your Retailer Agreement. Please re-ingest your item to meet the standards outlined in the Retailer Agreement." 

Baby and Grocery Item Restrictions

Restrictions to Baby and Grocery will apply to any item that does not offer additional assortment at competitive prices. Walmart proactively determines which items will be restricted and subsequently un-publishes items that do not meet the criteria outlined below.

Items in this category must:

  1. Expand Walmart’s existing selection
  2. Adhere to the competitive pricing policy as outlined in Automatic Pricing Rules Overview

Items unpublished as a result of these restrictions will not be re-published to upon request.

Reasonable Price Not SatisfiedThe item isn't adhering to the competitive pricing policy as outlined in Automatic Pricing Rules Overview.
Restricted Product Policy - Performance IssuesWe are looking at item level cancellation and return rates. Items where the cancellation rate is >2% and the return rate is >5% will be unpublished because of performance issues. We review performance every 7, 15 and 30 days.

If you believe your item has been mis-categorized and incorrectly identified as part of Baby or Grocery, please first make sure to download the file at the bottom of this article and cross reference that list with the category you’re provided during item setup. If an error has occurred, please follow the directions below when creating a case with Partner Support.


Refurbished iPhone Restrictions

Some Sellers are using the wrong Product ID for refurbished iPhones. We are unpublishing a number of these refurbished iPhones. If you replace the Product ID for this item, your refurbished iPhone will be republished.


Ink & Toner Restrictions

All items in the category of Ink & Toner are restricted on Walmart Marketplace.

Unpublish message: If your items are unpublished for this reason, you will see the message "Item is unauthorized." 

FAQs for Product Restrictions

Q: How can I get my Grocery and Baby items republished?
A: If no error has occurred due to mis-categorization, items will remain unpublished from the site indefinitely. Appeals made through Partner Support will not be honored unless proof of mis-categorization is provided.

Q: How can I get approved to sell Grocery and Baby items?
A: No pre-approval is required to sell items within these categories. Any item that meets the criteria outlined in the policy description at the top of this article will remain sellable on

Q: Are all categories on now restricted? 
A: No, at this time only Grocery and Baby items and certain branded items are affected. These items were most likely set up in the Food, Health & Beauty or Other categories. For a more detailed list of the affected items, review the file download at the bottom of this article.

Q: How do I know if my items were unpublished because they violate the refurbished iPhone restrictions?
A: Within Seller Center, navigate to Items & Inventory > Manage Items. Click on View Unpublished Items. Click on the Download button and choose the ‘download catalog’ option. Within this file there will be a specific reason listed for un-publishing for each item. In cases where errors occurred because of these restrictions, the reason will be: “There are restrictions on this item. Refer to the following Knowledge Base article for more info: Restricted Products and Brands Policy."

Q: Why do I have items unpublished that aren’t Baby or Grocery?
A: Although you did not set up these items as Baby or Grocery, our system has determined that the items fall within the Baby and Grocery restrictions. If one of your items has been incorrectly identified as Baby or Grocery, please create a case with Partner Support and include the following information:
  • Walmart Product ID or WPID (which can be found in the Item Report)
  • Category as displayed in your Seller Center dashboard
  • Reason code displayed for why the item was unpublished
  • Sales Revenue for this item for the last 30 days
